What CSLI actually gives you. NASA's Launch Services Program collects selected CubeSats and manifests them onto upcoming launches — as primary rideshare, secondary payloads, or International Space Station deployments. Each launch carrying these payloads is bundled into an ELaNa mission (Educational Launch of Nanosatellites) with its own number. NASA covers the integration and launch; you do not pay for the ride. That single fact removes the largest cost barrier standing between a university lab or a scrappy non-profit and actual orbit.

CSLI opportunities come through an Announcement of Partnership Opportunity, historically released around August with proposals due in November. NASA has signalled updates for future CSLI cycles, so confirm the current window on the official page rather than assuming last year's dates hold. Selection does not guarantee an immediate launch — you enter a queue and get manifested when a suitable ride appears, which can be a wait of a year or more.
What a strong proposal looks like. NASA is buying educational and scientific value, so lead with the investigation: what does this CubeSat measure or demonstrate, who learns from it, and why does it need to be in space rather than on a bench. Show that the team can realistically build and operate the spacecraft, and that you have — or have a plan for — the FCC or NOAA licensing that a real mission requires.
Where it fits in your funding ladder. Treat CSLI as the launch line of your budget, not the whole budget.
