The National Lab has run technology-advancement solicitations offering up to roughly $650,000 for flight projects in areas like in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing. It co-funds fundamental physical-science research with the National Science Foundation — a recent NSF/CASIS transport-phenomena solicitation put multiple millions of dollars behind ISS research, with a feasibility-review step in January 2026 and full proposals in early March 2026. And its Orbital Edge Accelerator 2026 cohort includes a Disrupt Track for in-space manufacturing and space-based biology, pairing selected startups with $500,000–$750,000 in private capital from an investor consortium, plus eligibility for a Boeing-sponsored Technology in Space Prize worth up to $100,000 in non-dilutive grant funding.

What reviewers reward. Two things above all: a genuine microgravity rationale (an experiment that could run just as well on the ground will not compete), and a credible path to value — a product, a dataset, or a capability someone will pay for. For in-space production specifically, NASA and CASIS are actively trying to seed a commercial market ahead of future commercial stations, so a clear commercialization story is a feature, not a distraction.
